Old Capitol manufactures custom interior and exterior wood doors for high-end residential, historic, and architectural projects—from a single custom door to complete interior and exterior packages of 100 openings or more. Our doors combine traditional joinery with engineered construction for long-term stability, durability, and serviceability.
Our stile-and-rail doors utilize engineered LSL cores fully faced and edged with solid hardwood. Unlike MDF-faced or solid MDF construction, our solid-hardwood-faced LSL stiles provide superior stiffness, stability, screw-holding strength, and resistance to dents and damage during shipping, installation, and everyday use, while remaining readily repairable and refinishable.
Exterior doors are built using durable, weather-resistant materials selected for demanding applications. Options include Sapele, Mahogany, White Oak, Accoya, Tricoya, and other materials appropriate to the project.
Interior doors are built using any wood species available to us. From Domestic to Exotic, we can build a door out of it. Our long list of hardwoods suppliers allows us access to mostly any wood species found in the world. Our paint grade doors are built from Poplar by default, but are available in any wood species.
We can faithfully reproduce existing historic doors or develop entirely new designs. True divided light (TDL) construction is preferred for glazed doors, with SDL available upon request as a cost-saving alternative.
Every door can be customized with virtually any sticking, panel, applied moulding, glass, species, and hardware configuration. Our extensive library of existing tooling also allows many custom profiles to be produced without additional tooling costs.
Our standard door jambs are 1" thick for added strength and durability. We ask that this thickness be accounted for when establishing rough openings and field dimensions. Custom jamb configurations and dimensions are also available as required.
Door Hardware
We work closely with architects and builders from the early stages of a project to select, specify, and coordinate hardware for our interior and exterior door packages. Early coordination helps ensure compatibility with the doors and prevents long-lead hardware—often 3–4 months or more—from delaying the project.
Our standard hinge is a high-quality solid brass ball-bearing hinge, available in numerous finishes. We stock common configurations so our doors can be hung and shipped even when specialty locking hardware has not yet arrived.
We also offer complete custom hardware preparation and installation for prehung door packages of any size. Doors can arrive on site with hinges, locks, multipoint systems, flush bolts, and other hardware fully prepped and installed, allowing the installation crew to set a substantially finished unit without returning later for hardware installation.
Depending on the complexity of the hardware, this can save 1–2 hours or more per opening while reducing field labor, coordination, and installation errors.
Door Finishing
We offer in-house finishing for both interior and exterior doors, including custom paint colors, stains, and clear topcoat systems. Doors can also be factory primed for finish painting in the field.
Our priming process includes thorough sanding after primer application, so doors arrive on site smooth, properly prepared, and ready for finish paint—reducing field preparation and labor.
Finishing systems include:
- Acrylic latex interior/exterior primers
- Urethanized acrylic paints and coatings
- Post-catalyzed conversion varnish for interior applications
- 2K urethane coatings for demanding exterior applications
Finishing systems are selected based on the application, wood species, desired appearance, and expected exposure.
